Description
Bucephalandra is a genus from Araceae family. Bucephalandra originated from Greek word which means bull’s head. This is due to its horn shaped anthers. The leaves have wavy edges that can grow about 2cm wide and 5cm long. Majority of Bucephalandra species have green leaves and reddish stems, however they may emit different shades from different viewing angle. This plant could be considered small plants which can grow around 5-10cm tall. They appear to grow dense and could branch without trimming. This plant usually found in isolated areas especially islands. They are found in Borneo in rivers, streams and also riverbank. Bucephalandra is a flowering plant that grows and reproduce slowly. In term of usage and care in aquaria, Bucephalandra resemble Anubias a lot.
Bucephalandra generally do not require intensive light and CO2, however, intensive light and CO2 injection helps them to grow at their best. The rhizome should not be covered when planting as it can caused this plant to die. Bucephalandra usually plant onto substrate but they thrive better in nutrient rich substrate. Their roots system are better develop on hard surface. Therefore it is advisable for them to be grown on woods and rocks.
